A few of my favorite lines from Cecelia's mysterious novel :)
Sure to keep you haunted...

  • I never wanted anything new; from the age of ten, I was convinced that you couldn't replace what was lost. I insisted on things having to be found.

  • I have found that the many imbalances within our individual lives result in an overall more worldly balance. What I mean is that no matter how unfair I thing something is, I need only look at the bigger picture to see how, in a way, it fits. My dad was right when he said that there was no such thing as a free meal: Everything comes at a cost to others, most of the time at a cost to ourselves. Whenever something is gained, it has been taken from another place. When something is lost, it arrives elsewhere. There are the usual philosophical questions: Why do bad things happen to good people? Within every bad thing I see good, and, likewise, with every good thing I see bad, however impossible it is to understand it or see it at the time. As humans we are the epitome of life; in life there is always a balance. Life and death, male and female, good and bad, beautiful and ugly, win and lose, love and hate. Lost and found.

Some of my fave quotes from The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. I hope you like them too :)

  • A person can get used to anything if given enough time.
  • He said simply, "My daddy used to tell me that the first time you fall in love, it changes your life forever, and no matter how hard you try, the feelin' never goes away. This girl you been telling me about was your first love. And no matter what you do, she'll stay with you forever."
  • "You can't live your life for other people. You've got to do what's right for you, even if it hurts some people you love."
  • Dusk, I realized then, is just an illusion, because the sun is either above the horizon or below it. And that means that day and night are linked in a way that few things are; there cannot be one without the other, yet they cannot exist at the same time. How would it feel, I remember wondering, to be always together, yet forever apart?
  • Silence is holy. It draws people together because only those who are comfortable with each other can sit without speaking. This is the great paradox.

Quotes from 'Ten out of Ten'.

Happily believing that things straighten out themselves in the end :)

  • Look, I get the fashion thing now. I do. How you look on the outside is a reflection of how you feel about yourself on the inside. If you let yourself go - not washing your hair, wearing the same clothes you slept in all day or clothes that don't fit or are out of style - that says, 'I do not care about myself. And you shouldn't care about me either.'
  • I don’t know what he’s been doing to work out while he was overseas...fighting monks in the Himalayas like Christian Bale in Batman Begins is what Lana thinks. Trisha says plain old weightlifting, while Shameeka says probably a combination of lifting and cardio.

Tina thinks he just ‘got hit with a stick of pure awesomeness.’
  • And now Rocky is begging me to watch Dora the Explorer with him. I understand that millions of kids love Dora and have learned to read or whatever from her show. But I wouldn't mind if Dora fell off a cliff and took her little pals with her.
  • Spicy is one word you definitely don't want to associate with your grandma's butt. Or juicy, for that matter.
  • Life isn't a romance novel. The truth is, the reasons romance novels sell so well - the reason why everyone loves them - is because no one's life is actually like that. Everyone wants their life to be like that.

Picture
  • See, I know this was going to happen. Tina takes everything and wraps it up in a silver tissue paper and puts a big bow on it and calls it Love. And I'm supposed to be the romance writer.
  • When I go to college the first thing I'm going to do it pick out all new friends. Because the friends I currently have are a little bit psychotic.
  • ‘Accept the things I cannot change,’ I said. ‘And pray for the courage to change the things I can, as well as the wisdom to know the difference.’

The thing is…I know this is good advice. It’s called the Serenity Prayer, and it really does put things in perspective.
  • Some people can seem perfect...everything about them can, on paper, be just right. Until you get to know them. Really know them. Then you find out, in the end, while they might be perfect to everyone else, they just aren't right for you.
  • 'Seriously. What is wrong with my family?' I asked with a groan. 'The same thing that's wrong with everybody's family,' Michael said. 'It's made up of human beings.'
  • Because friends like that are more precious than all the tiaras in the world.

In need of a psychoanalyst :P

  • 'God, Mom! Do you think I'd do that? I'm a feminist, you know. I don't need a man to make me happy.' It's just, you know, when that particular one is around, and I smell his neck, my oxytocin levels rise, and I feel calmer and more relaxed than I do when I'm alone. Or with anyone else.
  • But there's a REASON I worry so much about her. Sometimes Lilly makes really bad choices. And then she gets hurt.

And true, sometimes she makes good choices – like dating J.P. – and gets hurt anyway.

But making out with some random Muay Thai fighter in her kitchen just one day after breaking up with her boyfriend of six months?

I don’t see how that can be a good choice.

  • We're all going to sit down to dinner like a normal family. Just me, my mom, her husband, their kid, and my dad the Prince of Genovia. Oh, yeah. we're a normal family all right. No wonder I'm in therapy.

Picture
  • Parents. Seriously. First they get on my case because I won't get  out of bed or do anything. Then I do what they want, and get out of bed and socialize, and they get mad about THAT too. You can't win.
  • It's amazing how the more times change, the more they stay the same.
  • And, OK, I spent most of the time I was dating Kenny trying to figure out how to break up with him. But still. She can't be mad at me for exactly doing what she's doing..can she ?

Quotes from 'After Eight'.

Like totally kinda OCD-ish :D

  • Why can't Ms Martinez see that by putting me in Intro to Creative Writing instead of Intermediate, where I belong, she is repressing my artistic growth? How is the blossom of my creativity ever going yo be able to bloom if no one WATERS it?
  • 'A LITTLE TRIM??? You look like a cotton swab.'

Picture
  • 'Well, I'm broken too,' Lilly said defensively. 'And I'm still able to FUNCTION. A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.'

I really hate this expression. I bet fish would totally want bicycles, if they had legs.

  • 'True romantic love really doesn't come around that often,' he went on. 'When it does, it's foolish to throw it away because of some silly thing the object of your affections did before the two of you were even dating.'

I just stared at him. I don’t think it was my imagination that he looked so much like the elf king in The Lord of the Rings.

If the elf king had been totally bald, I mean.

Sooo totally in love with it :P

  • Still, I think my story, 'No More Corn!', is pretty good. I mean, it has everything a short story SHOULD have in it: Romance. Pathos. Suicide. Corn. Who could ask for more ?
  • Mia: Um, yeah, but unless we’re going to CHARGE them to publish their stuff, I don’t see how that’s going to raise US any cash.

Tina: Don’t you see, Mia? We can charge people for copies of the magazine once we’ve printed it. I bet we’ll sell LOTS of copies.

Lilly: Thank you, Tina. The lack of jadedness in your response is quite refreshing compared to SOME people’s negative attitudes.

  • He's gotta be about a HUNDRED now. He's so old, he looks like a cross between Larry King and a raisin.
  • Because to me, J.P. is the Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn In The Chilli. He's not John Paul Reynolds-Abernathy the Fourth. The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn In The Chilli doesn't have a NAME. He's just... the Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn In The Chilli. The guy I wrote a short story about. A short story that was rejected by Sixteen magazine. A short story I hope to expand into a novel someday. A short story at the end of which  the Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn In The Chilli throws himself under the F train. How can I talk to a guy I had thrown himself under a train - even if it WAS only fiction?

Picture
  • The truth is, I am not even the biggest Coldplay fan, because I don't really approve of the lead singer letting his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, name their kid Apple.
  • But that is just how boys are. They are like freaks of nature.
  • 'In any case, you're much too young to be so serious about a boy. A princess needs to kiss a lot of frogs before she can say for certain she's found her prince.'
  • 'But there's another way, Grandmere. You might want to check it out. It's called being nice to people.'

  • Mysteries are okay in books, but in real life they kind of suck.
  • If everybody would just concentrate on their personal strengths, the world would be a much better place.

Picture
  • 'But, Mia, you're pure and good of heart,' Boris pointed out to me. 'People who are pure and good of heart always beat out evil.'   Um, yeah. In books like The Hobbit, for crying out loud.
  • Indirect proof = assumption made at the beginning that leads to contradiction. Contradiction indicates the assumption is false and the desired conclusion is true.

Because Lana is pretty, she must be nice. Because all things that are pretty are nice.

         FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE.

Killer algae is pretty, but it is also deadly.

Postulate = a statement that is assumed to be true without proof.

I can pretty much postulate that I will lose today’s debate to Lana.

You know what? I think I might be getting the hang of this Geometry thing.

Some of my favorite lines from Thanks for the Memories by Cecelia Ahern.

  • Rushing, rushing, rushing. We are always rushing. Never have enough time here, always trying to make our way there. Need to have left here five minutes ago, need to be there now. The phone rings again and I acknowledge the irony.
  • And, my heart still pumps on. Even when broken it still works.
  • 'The Lord acts in mysterious ways, in ways we often can neither explain nor understand, tolerate nor bear.'
  • 'Perfer et obdura; dolor hic tibi proderit olim.' - 'Be patient and tough; someday this pain will be useful to you.'
  • 'Who cares? When has life ever made sense? Let's keep going.'
  • 'You have to take your moments, love,' Dad says, taking in the sight before him. 'Don't just go head first into everything, like a bull seeing red.'
  • 'Everything builds, including our ability to cope with it (missing someone). That's how we keep going.'
  • 'Because when you're in trouble you look harder for answers than those who aren't, and it's those answers that help you through.'

Well, just like I like to read chick-flicks, I love watching them as well. This is one of my favorite poems in one of my favorite movies of all times - "10 Things I Hate About You". Yeah, I know this is a site where we publish stuff about books :P but I LOVE the poem. :)

Completely in love with the movie,

I hate the way you talk to me
And the way you cut your hair.
I hate the way you drive my car.
I hate it when you stare.
I hate your big dumb combat boots
And the way you read my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick.
                    It even makes me rhyme.

I hate the way you're always right.
I hate it when you lie.
                    I hate it when you make me laugh;
Even worse when you make me cry.

I hate it when you're not around
And the fact that you didn't call,
                    But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you;
                    Not even close;
                    Not even a little bit;
                    Not even at all.

Here's the scene from the movie. Love it. :)

  • Has he mentioned to you whether or not he's, um, planning on asking anyone ?
ANYONE? Just who do you mean by ANYONE? His DOG ?
    You know what I mean.
  • [after a long paragraph of Mia complaining about everything wrong in her life]
You forgot to complain about your grandmother.
  • Helen Thermopolis: 'Frank, I'm pregnant.'
Mr Gianini: 'Oh OK. What do you want to do?'
    Helen Thermopolis: 'Marry you.'
    Mr Gianini: 'OK.'

HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!Where is the romance in THAT ????

  • Great. I get to spend my summer looking up some old mummy's nasal cavity. My dream come true. Oh no, sorry, Mia. No hanging out at Coney Island with your one true love for you. No fun volunteer work tutoring little kids with their reading. No cool summer job at Kim's Video, rewinding Princess Mononoke and Fist of the North Star. No, you get to commune with a thousand-year-old corpse. Yippee !
  • She fully deserved to have her Chanel suit ruined on account of being stupid enough to bring her DOG to MY BIRTHDAY dinner. I so wish I had seen this. No one would admit it later - not even Mom - but I bet it was really, really funny to see Grandmere covered in soup. I swear, if that's all I had got for my birthday, I'd have been totally happy.
